Harmonic Grammar with Harmonic Serialism∗

چکیده
Loss of restrictiveness through arithmetic: Concern is well-founded here. As we have shown, however, recourse to the full-blown power of numerical optimization is not required. . . In Optimality Theory, constraints are ranked, not weighted: harmonic evaluation involves the abstract algebra of order relations rather than numerical adjudication between quantities. ∗This research would not have been possible, or as enjoyable, without the contributions of my collaborators: Michael Becker, Rajesh Bhatt, Paul Boersma, Karen Jesney, Chris Potts and Patrick Pratt. It also would not have been possible without discussion with many other members of this department.

Harmonic Serialism and Finite-State Optimality Theory
This paper presents a new finite-state model of Optimality Theory (OT). In this model, two assumptions are imposed on the OT framework. Firstly, I adopt the Harmonic Serialism version of OT, in which output forms are derived from input forms via a series of incremental changes. Secondly, constraints are assumed to be strictly local in the sense that each markedness constraint specifies a set of...

متن کاملLength and voicing in Friulian and Milanese Or why rule-free derivations are needed
This paper claims that phonology should express the relationship between vowel length and obstruent voicing operationally rather than in parallel. The empirical focus in on Friulian and Milanese. The distribution of vowel length in Friulian is predictable from the underlying laryngeal specification of obstruents. Stressed vowels are long before underlyingly voiced word-final obstruents although...
متن کاملLearning serial constraint-based grammars
In this paper we describe a method for learning grammars in the general framework of Harmonic Serialism (see McCarthy this volume for references and an introduction). We have two main goals. The first is to address the hidden structure problem that serial derivations introduce. The second is to address the problem of learning variation, which has yet to be confronted in this framework (see also...
